PUTIGNANO is a municipality of 25813 inhabitants located in the south-east of Bari, famous for its Carnival, the oldest in Europe, which has lasted for 622 years. Its ancient village is elliptical in shape, protected over the centuries by mighty walls, of which the 3 main entrances, with the mighty walls and circular towers, which still partly surround the city, were built by the Balì Giambattista Carafa, in 1472, the year in which the Porta Barsento was also opened which connects to the Porta Grande or Maggiore along the road, called "la Chiancata". Since 1088, Putignano was given as a gift to the government of the Benedictine Monks by the Norman Count Goffredo d'Altavilla. From 1317 until the early 1800s, the city was under the dominion of the Knights of Malta, called Gerosolomitani, whose headquarters were near the Mother Church of San Pietro, the current Palazzo del Principe, formerly known as the Palazzo del Balì. This, Piazza Plebiscito, is the political and economic heart of the city: the Sedile, the ancient seat of the city government, also overlooks it. The ancient walls and the old castle were demolished in 1219 by Frederick II due to the disobedience of the Putignanesi, who had shown themselves to be too faithful to the Pope by denying Frederick II access to the city upon his return from a hunting trip. Putignano is, and remained Catholic, rich in art and culture: this is demonstrated by the numerous churches and convents present in the ancient city. The people of Putignano are hard workers and have given prestige to the country, always placing themselves at the top of the province of Bari for quality of life, wealth, entrepreneurship and productivity and in many sectors. Known in the 60s and 70s for being a major national producer of wedding dresses and children's clothing, it enjoys great economic resources highlighted by about twenty branches of credit institutions existing in the country.
