Explore the Isola Bella nature reserve, accessible via a small sandy path, or travel by cable car (the station is a 5-minute walk from the apartment) to the charming centre of Taormina, perched above the sea. The main street, Corso Umberto I, lined with medieval buildings now housing shops, bars and restaurants, runs through the centre of town and beyond, there are a mass of winding streets and alleyways to wander through. Outside Taormina, Mount Etna and the picturesque villages that line the hillside make for a great day out. If you're keen on hiking and some gentle action, head to the rocky gorges of the Alcantara Gorge or the Nebrodi Mountains, a national park boasting stunning natural scenery. For a taste of city life, head south along the coast to the cities of Catania and Acireale and, a little further afield, Syracuse, with its striking fusion of Greek, Byzantine, Norman and Baroque architecture.
